RAMMED EARTH

Rammed earth has long been one of our favourite building materials, and over the years we have designed many homes throughout Western Australia using this timeless construction technique.

One of the oldest forms of construction, rammed earth has been used for thousands of years. In its simplest form, it is created by compacting layers of earth between formwork to create solid walls. More recent developments in construction technology and material research have refined the process through improved formwork systems, stabilised soil mixes, and water resistant additives, resulting in highly durable and environmentally responsive construction.

Beyond its structural simplicity, rammed earth possesses a warmth, texture, and handmade quality that records the process of its making. The subtle layering, tonal variation, and natural imperfections within the walls create spaces that feel grounded, tactile, and deeply connected to landscape.

Rammed earth also performs exceptionally well within the Western Australian climate. Its high thermal mass helps regulate indoor temperatures by absorbing and slowly releasing heat, allowing homes to remain cooler in summer and warmer in winter. The material also provides excellent acoustic performance, durability, fire resistance, and low maintenance qualities.

As a natural and environmentally responsive material, rammed earth aligns closely with our approach to residential architecture through its longevity, material honesty, and connection to place. The resulting spaces often possess a calm and atmospheric quality that feels both timeless and deeply human.
